Guides & Information

Constructing an area or paving whether it be a patio or a driveway is well within the scope of the average D.I.Y. enthusiast. By following a simple step by step guide, it is possible to create something special, which will be enjoyed by the whole family for years and add value to the home.

See our hints below and let County Stone help you create your dream..

Planning

  • Sketch out all areas that are to be paved.
  • Include items such as drains, damp proofing, walls, lawns etc.
  • Consider how much sand and cement will be required for “bedding” the slabs on.

Preparation

  • Dig out soft soil and make sure the area ready to be paved is firm and level, allowing a fall away from buildings for drainage.
  • Decide where to lay the first slab (this is usually a corner flag and probably at the highest point.)
  • Use string to mark out the area, keeping the joints at 90 degrees to each other.

Laying

  • The sand and cement need to be mixed together in manageable quantities.
  • Place a dab of mix in each corner where the flag is to be laid and one in the middle.
  • Each flag must not bear any weight for at least one day.
  • Keep cement off the surface of the stone paving as it can cause staining.
  • The exact position of each flag should be achieved first time.
  • Do not apply excessive force on the flag, but by checking with a spirit level, apply gentle pressure until the exact position is found.
  • It is best to lay full flags first and then cut any odd shapes and sizes that may be needed, with a stone angle grinder.

Grouting

  • Grouting can only be done on a dry day.
  • Use building sand mixed at a ratio of 8 parts sand to 1 part cement, mixed “just moist” with a small amount of matching pigment (if required).
  • Use a bricklayers pointing trowel or brush to push the mix into the gaps to form a uniform surface to the pointing.
  • Any excess mix should be swept aside and re-used.  Do not brush it over the flags until the mix has become dry (usually within 1.5 - 2 hours).

Maintenance

  • County Stone Cast Stone Paving is designed to be maintenance free.
  • Periodic cleaning using a mild detergent and a yard brush is recommended to maintain the overall appearance of the stone paving.
  • Do not pressure wash.
