About Us

County Stone (formerly Bowland Stone) has been a family run business since 1982 and has recently celebrated 25 successful years in business. Inspired by the beautiful landscape of the Lake District, they create top quality cast stone products for building and landscaping, and have produced an impressive collection of both the traditional and contemporary.

Julie Elleray and her sister Karen Ryan, together with their husbands (both called Peter), run their business from Kendal, Cumbria, employing eight people. They supply local builders, architects and landscaping firms, as well as customers looking for something bespoke. They produce a wide range of cast stone work, paving, walling and landscaping materials that are easily mistaken for natural stone, but at a fraction of the price of the real thing!

County Stone are proud to feature on a number of high-profile local developments, including the Mountain Ash conversion for Charles Church Ltd at Windermere; the new Travelodge on the outskirts of Kendal; and schemes for major developers as well as self build projects.

In the last twelve months they’ve also won contracts to supply cast stone for a new house being built in Southern Ireland for a famous American actor, as well as producing special items to replace plinths, balustrades and steps at Rydal Hall, Cumbria.

Julie Elleray, one of the Directors said it had been “fantastic” to be involved in a major heritage project. She explained, “Our products look so much like the real thing that they have been accepted for use in conservation areas by local planning authorities.  Our paving resembling Lakeland blue slate was even used at the Lake District National Park Visitors Centre. We were thrilled to be asked to help with the Rydal Hall restoration project, which involved “weathering” the cast stone so that it didn’t look brand new and wouldn’t stand out against the original features”.
